We trekked the folding mounts of snow,
Their frozen peaks arose like glass ,
And no amount of what we know,
Prepared us for the glacial pass,
Icy bergs afloat below us,
Above us swirled the sky,
But all the dismal eye could show us,
Was a thrashing and a sigh,
The sun arises with a glare,
Positioned strangely in the sky,
Six straight months it lingers there
The next six months are night,
The human heart here loses hope,
Bewildered by the wayward drifts,
The three of us were down to two,
The sharp glissades made sure of this,
The arctic gradient seemed to spread,
In glassy never-ending fields,
Its polar air out-chilled the dead,
And death seemed all this trek could yield,
Beyond the diamond shelves of ice,
Through the bitter slants of rain,
My numbing comrade lost his life,
On the tundra’s callous plane,
As one I stood, alone in wait,
In peculiar shifts of winters light,
By endless slabs of frozen slate,
No outpost warmed the barren sight,
A ghostly blur of winters breath,
Meanders through the drowsy clime,
I only hope it brings my death,
And ceases time…
