Smiling

Contributed by JayBryant on Thursday, 8th May 2008 @ 05:04:20 AM in AEST
Topic: war

I opened my eyes and stared,
onto my friends smiling face.
His eyes locked to mine,
I let out a laugh for a second.
But the war stopped there,
the sound of the machine gun nest fell silent.
The smell of gun powder dissipated.
I was on that beach alone with my friend,
looking at his face.
Those empty blue orbs looking into nothingness,
his cocky smile still on his face.
He was going to kill lots of them he said,
but now he lays still, quiet, dead.
I reached out with my hand to touch him,
to see if this was real, hoping it was a dream.
Contact with skin, the war resumed
gunfire, explosions and the wails of men,
were all around me.
Forward, forward! Yelled another,
grabbing me by the arm he pulled me away.
From my dead smiling friend,
dragged back into this harsh reality.
I picked up my Rifle, aimed and fired,
I will strike at the enemy.
No mercy, I will win this war myself, for him.
I ran up the beach a fierce yell in my throat,
Bullets whistled by, explosions all around me.
A barb wired fence didn’t stop my charge,
up and over I went in one quick swoop.
My friend’s dead smile still lingering in my thoughts,
I crested the hill were the enemy held.
One against many, the odds didn’t matter in my mind,
took aim at the closest one.
One last inhale of breath and it began
squeezing the trigger over and over,
even after my ammunition was spent.
my mind was not on the battle at hand.
But locked onto the smile of my dead friend,
we thought this war was going to be a game.
But war is never a game but murder, a massacre,
sharp pain entered my chest, my friends smile faded.
I was once again thrown back into reality,
shot and bleeding, my breathe came shallow and hard.
Vision blurry and fading,
I flew backward down the hill.
Looking upward toward the sky, smiling.
