war

Why bear ye forth these standards
When there’s no cause to make war?
You’ve roused the plebs with rhetoric
And uniformed the poor,
With the lash and with the cudgel
You taught them wrong from right,
And gave them marching orders
Straight off to gentle night.
Then on the field of battle
You had them form their ranks,
Young lads with fix’ed bayonets
You threw against the tanks,
Now the bugler sounds the recall
And you take defensive stance,
Two thousand souls the butchers bill
To halt this one advance.
What think ye of the widows
And the children still so young,
Now left with cries of “father”
Left unanswered on their tongues?
Oh if they only knew ye
Who sit in gilded chair
And send the men to certain end
And nary show a care!
The devil ticks thy number,
Of that you may be sure,
For each soldier boy you damn to hells
That you could scarce endure!

Good political diatribe, Scott, and I liked the 'ye olde English' touch - it suited the historical material and references that definitely have modern resonance. Glass of Iraqi Red, anyone?
