Walk that mile
Perhaps I’ll let you try them on
And you walk that mile in these
But do not take this lightly
It will not be done with ease
There have been many obstacles
Which they’ve had to overcome
Oppression, racism, and prejudice
And I guess they’re still not done
But those resigned to wear them
Are surely never to forget
How that mile has grown quite endless
And they’ve not made it yet
My people stand in these, so proud
That they have still endured
They’re not afraid to walk that mile
Of this, be reassured
Their spirit is one with this earth
For they share a like affliction
And no others care for her as much
Or with such a benediction
So now that you have tried them on
And have seen how this begins
You know that mile goes on and on
When you walk in moccasins
