Lonely and smoking a cigarette

The world is in upheaval
I am sick of it
I am ready to walk a new path
I feel no more need to shower the world with beautiful words
I feel betrayed and heartbroken by my own country
I have come to pity children
I want them to see a different world
I want cars and cell phones, computers and televisions
Done away with
I am afraid for the children
Will war always be upon them, casting its uneasy, feeble thoughts towards them?
I want to change the world.
I want to take all of the cans of food in my cupboard and ship them to Africa.
I want to starve to feed the starving.
There is no grace, no quality to truth.
It is a dark, awkward face swollen in the stained and greasy glass
Of a waffle house
Lonely and smoking a cigarette.
I have a strong desire to walk into the desert and live alone, away from all of this.
Our soldiers have spread thin, our economy is in recession, everyday there are more poor wandering crowded streets, and yet we talk on our phones, we drive our SUVs and buy milk at six dollars a gallon, and say, “it will all come back together.”
It will all come back together
Still, I am afraid for the children.
Still, I want Africa fat and beautiful.
Still, I want people to see.
To see what I see.
Isn’t that what we all want?
What I see is a raw meat, rotting in the store while a world away a child starves. What I see is a torch doused for human rights when a block away an old woman dies in the back alley of a crowded street.
What I see is a thousand vigils lost beneath a 37” LCD HD TV.

A very hard hitting piece of work.
There is no grace, no quality to truth.
It is a dark, awkward face swollen in the stained and greasy glass
Of a waffle house
Lonely and smoking a cigarette.
Loved this stanza.
Peace
~Shannon
