Cityscape

Contributed by spike on Tuesday, 8th April 2008 @ 10:50:28 PM in AEST
Topic: Tributes

The side streets are trails
between sheer cliffs of steel and glass
giant mountain spires insinuate the sky
lofty monuments to hubris and skill
crowned by morning mist
reflecting the cottonwool clouds
their mantles shift
with the air and life inside

Dreams coalesce and dissolve in the skyline
while disparate souls shuffle the streets
good and evil constantly struggle
but a balance of sorts is kept

Shadows nest in quiet spaces
where cold gusts of old memories
bring forth a collective shudder
and movement, always movement

Libraries, galleries, museums
oases in the pickings of culture
draw the thirsty and opportune
parched souls lapping at the wellspring
here too are green spaces
lungs of a city, breathing in, and out
the great leafy bellows
quietly, sleepily keeping the world alive

History seeps from the landscape
from the hard concrete and bedrock
people hungered and died here
thrived and bred here
their blood trace still a stain
good deeds and valour has been swallowed
alongside cowardice and betrayal
but not digested
this is our city
to embrace and linger

Spike my friend .. .. what a beautiful "picture" of city life. Through and through.

The shot you posted at the beginning is exceptional. How inspiring! But your words..
they just steal in and hold minds captive with their insight and depth. (Something
you do with regular frequency it seems). I don't know why but I seem drawn to
the forth stanza. I think it may well be the introduction of "earth meets concrete"
you've accomplished in my mind's eye. I am always fascinated when in the city,
I catch a couple birds twittering about the buildings. Their song seems so much
more welcome. I can't explain it, but you've endeared me to the city once again.

Great job, poet!
