Movie night and the air was crisp, and I missed the herbs I used to grow in the backyard with the one man I loved the most, but despised even more
She was new, hadn’t yet felt the calm waters of sweet, hadn’t yet begun the process of
Taking your scars and pushing them into the deep, without a hook
I hadn’t known her, although she seemed familiar, her eyes had the same kind of sag that I had when I first walked into these windy shores
We became aquainted, she slept where I slept, she drank where I Drank, and it felt good to be apart of her
She eased into the whole setting, with animal instincts, she surveyed the scene, kept to herself, ate her salad, drank her milk, watched on with eyes amazed
Kind of like me
Like I said movie night rolled around and she sat in the green chair, not knowing that I had claimed it from the very start
I knew her so I didn’t say a thing
Like when a guard (who isn’t cruel) lets the jailbird sit instead of taking his shower
They watched the movie, I watched the splitting hairs, the swollen fingers, the bubbling wrists, the taped down feelings that weren’t shown because they were so
Apparent
And I Swear through the night air I could hear her saying, “help me”
Of course that was my disease
The movie went on for hours, I had to go to the bathroom during it so I walked up to the door and opened up my lungs, my heart, my nose
Touched her bedframe, her pillow, her scented paper, the works
Knowing that I would become this in a second
Knowing that after the movie we would be doing more than talking
Knowing that another example of my disease was looking at me square in the eyes, indirectly
And I knew this and I liked it
Had I plowed through cottonwoods at all?
