The Everlasting Effort of Our Youth

Contributed by a7x36 on Thursday, 27th March 2008 @ 12:18:53 PM in AEST
Topic: toughstuff

My, my, my, would you look at the time?
I’ve got to go.
It’s time to get a job,
Become part of the mob
Of engineers and lab technicians.
The crowd of dirty men in clean white coats who make more money
Than I could ever stomach to have in my possession.

Dying young has its perks,
But fame refuses to seek the ones with ideals and dreams.
Instead we sell these dreams to the young ones
Who still believe they can be anything they want to be.

But we neglect to note their imminent fate
As starving artists and broken spirits.
When is enough finally enough
And when will we start telling the truth?
That those who hold onto their dreams will die,
And the market will make a pretty penny during their wake.

Verily I say unto thee that glory is not for the good at heart,
And the integrous will struggle until their last breath
Is exhaled face down in a gutter on a dirty street lined
With all those people who thought they could change the world
Into something that contains even a shred of beauty.

Vietnam and Iraq were not the only ones.
Sudan still hates itself with a machete in hand,
And people keep dropping like flies from tainted water,
And a ruler will hoard all his nation’s food
In the name of his artificial god and national stability.

And we will continue to tease ourselves
With our efforts towards world peace and love.
But the human nature of selfishness instead will reign supreme
As capitalism starves itself to death,
And fascism’s Godforsaken body is exhumed to help
A struggling economy afford its cappuccino and prom dresses.

It’s time to ride off into the sunset
Promoting ideals we know will never come true.
As we lose battle after battle and martyrdom becomes the norm,
We will know we fought valiantly for the righteous cause
Of decent life for every person on this diverse and stubborn earth.
