We Don't Do Earthquakes !, Do We ?

Contributed by puppy_dog_eyes on Saturday, 1st March 2008 @ 11:32:18 AM in AEST
Topic: HumorPoetry

Hold the front page, raise alarms, catastrophe has struck
They say it registered 5.3 and caused widespread distress
Tranqulity at breakfast torn apart by disbelief
Not this time through cricket scores but the horror of the quake

Slates dislodged from rooftop perches, rubble thrust to ground
A neighbour's cat was traumatized, a garden wall collapsed
Did stiff upper lips all quiver ?, did mayhem rule the scene?
Our isolated island now aligned with wider world

For those momentous seconds, when earth would not stand still
T-shirts must be printed, exclaiming "I was there !!"
What learned scholar should we trust, appoint to head the team?
Advisor of our destiny , chief of Committee Shake.

The fabric of society, is stained with utter shock
What fate for this Utopia, our vulnerable little isle
Cobras in the flowerbed?, snakes lurking in the shower ?
Maybe even barracuda in the local village pond.

Where once sleep troubled only by the rising cost of fuel
Nightmares fuelled by visions of apocalyptic doom
We think, discuss, consult, deny that all they said was true
Because we live in England, we don't do earthquakes!!, do we ?

LOL well I will say this lass does not do earthquakes hee hee.....

I loved this entire write start to finish, made me smile. Even the way in which you presented it I could feel people excited over a mishap of the earthquake.....

Nice job here!

Hold on to your socks and don't get shaken out of your bed now!

as a fellow brit i find this amazingly funny! it is very true about us.. we like to make the smallest thing a hell of a lot bigger than it is!

my favourite line in the whole poem has to be

A neighbour's cat was traumatized, a garden wall collapsed

it made me laugh aloud.

i guess i wasnt directly affected by this because i am now in the USA... i didnt even know it happened till a friend told me today.

this poem was awesome and i love it when i find a brit with a sense of humour! = )

thanks for sharing.

Well, living in New Zealand,
We do do earthquakes.
Grew up in a town built on
a major fault line.
Totally destroyed in 1935
and having said that, even the NZ press blow
it all out of proportion so
can relate to this as well.
The press make it worse than it is'and I oft times
am left wondering where they are talking about
inregards to the so called catastrophy
that happened and I was actuallt there
at the time.
Hit the nail on the head there.
Cheers for the smiles

Julie
