The Old Man’s War

You think this war’s a joke the old man said, waving his empty glass in his hand
I’ll tell you about war and the horrors I met fighting in those desert sands
I saw men killed in an instant when they copped a bullet through their heart
And others die real slow with their guts hanging out from bellies blown apart
I saw men go mad at the sound of bombs dropping both day and night
And others who couldn’t take it killed themselves to escape their plight
I saw starvation, disease, and poverty, I saw people eating rats and mice
Some poor beggars scrambling and fighting in the dirt for a grain of rice
Yes I even ran my bayonet through an enemy, I took that man’s life
And all I felt was sorrow that I may have taken a husband from a wife
A son from a loving mother or perhaps a father from an innocent child
I hear time and again about the glory of war, Christ! That makes me wild
There is no glory it’s just plain and simple horror, lives so brutally wasted
And you young blokes sit here and joke about horrors you’ve never tasted
I lost my two brothers in that stinkin’ war, it put my mother into the ground
While the politicians’ sons were here, at home, all safe and bloody sound
We sat there stunned at the old man’s words and descriptions he had painted
Even our beer lost its flavour as if with long dead soldiers’ blood ‘twas tainted
The old man then was silent as he slumped onto the bar in the stale beer swill
As I left I dropped a fiver to buy him courage against the horror he’s living still
