tender perishing

I feel a tender
perishing
come due to our
regret.
I can't quiet
reach the point
of no turning back. . .
& yet
the consequence
of this seems
overwhelming now
to me.
even as
this sad creature
fades into the
shadow of
good-bye. . .
& tempts our souls
to grieve. . .
with trembling hand
once more
outstretched
as if to say
or plead. . .
I'm so yours
for the taking. . .
so yours
for the taking.
& let this
pass away
from me.

Elle,
neatly transecting the axes of metaphysical and metaphorical. Pitch perfect in its capture of the essence of the parting, at the tipping point of one way or the other. Masterful.
