Withering Flowers

Old age is like a withering flower; sans luster and charm,
It is destined to fall to the dust any moment, uncared.
None will be there to shed tears or to mourn its death,
Every one sang in its praise when it was in full bloom.
A few aged parents live miserably and pathetically,
Discarded like a worn-out bicycle in the corner of the cellar.
Confined in a dinghy room, they count their fateful days;
Hoping death may bring peace to their tormented soul.
Some are ‘paying guests’, giving away their pension paltry,
To ‘dear sons’, brought up by them in sweat and blood;
Sadly, treated like the inmates of a cheap lodging house.
The story of the dependent old is an all time tragedy,
Their subsistence depends upon the mercy of their children.
Some dump them in care homes, relieved of their ‘burden,’
Where they languish and die like a beggar on the road, unwept.
Settled in alien soil some leave them to the care of the fate,
Loneliness and crippling illness hasten their march to the grave.
Dollars only buy them daily bread and not happiness and peace.
Not for the basic necessities of life alone, the old crave for;
Long to live amidst their dear ones, in their last lap of life.
Playing and sharing fairy tales with their grand children,
Would make them eternally happy and ever cheerful,
And surely relieve them of their stress and old-age worries.
The wisdom of the elderly is a great asset to the society,
To steer it to the righteous path; to keep it healthy and vibrant.
Old age is the end point of journey; every one has to pass through,
There is no bypass to reach our ultimate and unknown destination.
And for that reason, respect the old age and respect the old people.
Make them happy and comfortable in their final hours of ‘wait in’,
And share your love and make them feel, you really care for them.
