I watched each clod of earth fall from his triangular spade,
Fascinated by what I had not the strength to do.
He spoke little that day and what he did say was said
With the conviction of truth, in all its simple beauty:
"Don't walk among the furrows. I spent all morning
Digging and planting what you're walking on"
Abashed by these words of authority, I slunk away,
Shame and guilt pressing down on me.
Now he's gone, I hear his voice breaking in
On my moments of repose and disquiet,
The slow, deliberate judge of all I do.
I tread carefully on the flagstones,
Never upon the cracks between,
As if they were freshly turned earth
And I, a boy of five again.
