patron of the arts
that’s
me.
stupid.
that’s me,
also.
i promised this woman
who runs
the local
poetry club
that i’d stop by
their meeting
tomorrow afternoon
and pick up a copy of
the newest book
by their latest discovery…
some woman
who won
a Guggenheim
or book of the year
or something like
that.
she’s also had her share
of Fellowships
and prizes.
nice guy
that i am,
i’m going to buy it
but i already know what
it’s going to be like…
the same old
blah blah blah,
with all the proper
references
and footnotes,
obscurities
and allusions.
it’s
going to be crap
because it’s all too simple
and all too
safe.
all too poetic.
without even reading it
i know
she never once wrote a poem about
three pens on a dirty counter,
a crumpled candy wrapper
and a nearly empty
bottle of wine.
not once
has she looked over
the edge of
whatever book's she's reading
and observed
life.
not once.
i’m sure of it.
right now, my dog’s sitting on the floor,
panting,
growing older,
getting deaf,
but
she’s got
more heart
and soul
and poetry
left in
her
than i’ll ever find
in that stupid
overpriced
book
i know i’m going to buy
tomorrow
afternoon.
