in preparing for a tv appearance

Contributed by JohnYamrus on Saturday, 26th January 2008 @ 08:42:09 AM in AEST
Topic: oops

in preparing for a tv appearance

to promote my new book,
i asked the host
what were my restrictions
regarding language
or content…

“oh, we’re cable…
don’t worry about it.

just read
whatever you want.”

just to play it safe
i e-mailed him a file
containing everything
i thought i might want to read.

the next day
he wrote back
saying everything’s fine,
but please don’t read the poem
“some dumb *****”.

either don’t read it
or please change the line.

now the poem’s about this guy
(a “dumb *****”)
who plots a public suicide
to make a political statement.

but, he’s a rookie at public suicide
and he blows it.

he forgets to inform the media
and ends up
setting himself on fire
with no one watching.

i thought it was
a pretty funny poem…
but it was either too political for him
or he didn’t like the word,
and he asked me not to read it.

so, here i sit,
going through my stack of poems,
trying to come up with
22 minutes worth of magic.

finally,
bored with it all,
i put the stack away and go upstairs.

i walk into the kitchen
and Kathy asks:

”well, how’d it go?
what are you going to read?”

i crack open a beer,
look at her and say:

“aw, heck,
i don’t know.

just
some dumb *****.”

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
