a real bad poem about a real good dog…
Phoebe’s pretty much deaf now
and can’t jump up on the bed anymore.
even the steps are getting tough for her
and she hardly has
any interest
in playing with her ball.
she still carries it with her
out of habit,
but that’s about it.
now,
when she walks out into the yard to pee,
she walks slowly,
with her head down
and she keeps turning around
to look over her shoulder
to make sure i’m still there…
waiting.
and i stand the
in the doorway
and watch.
and wait.
i owe her
that much.
it’s the least i can do…
standing there,
powerless,
while slowly, but surely,
the world
slips away.
