A Soldier Reports To God.

Contributed by The_Phantom on Monday, 29th July 2002 @ 10:07:41 PM in AEST
Topic: Patriotic

The soldier stood and face his God, which must always come to pass,

He hoped his shoes were shining, just as bright as his brass,

Step forward now you soldier, how should I deal with you,

Have you always turned the other cheek, to my church have you been true,

The soldier squared his shoulders and said, no Lord I guess I ain't,

Becuse those of us that carry guns can't always be a saints,

But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep,

Though I worked alot of overtime when the bills got too steep,

I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear,

And sometimes, God forgive me I wept unmanly tears,

I know I don't deserve a place among the people here,

They never wanted me around except to calm their fears,

If you've a place for me here, Lord it needn't be so grand,

I never expected or had much, but if you don't I'll understand,

Step forward now you soldier, you've borne your burdens well,

Walk peacefully on heaven's streets, you've done your time in hell.

Forever Faithful

The Phantom

He puts down well the dilemna faced by all good men-at-arms:

"The soldier squared his shoulders and said, no Lord I guess I ain't,/ Becuse those of us that carry guns can't always be a saints,..."

As Zao said in "Die Another Day"-one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, but hey, exactly how many of us actually never made a single mistake? you tell me!

Regardless of who wrote it, I'm glad it was posted. It is a beautiful piece. People would do well to remember that there is a person, a human, a soul ... behind the mask of the soldier.
So I thank you Phantom, for posting it - especially at this time.

From a military man myself i know the fears and anxiety of all of us as we pick up our weapons...fearing what we do is right...fearing not for God or country but the people that love us. Truly an amazing poem

Very good poem although I don't believe it will quite go that way. Very tight rhyming scheme and personal unique theme.

Theirs somthing like this in an e-mail somoene sent me awhile ago and also the "served time in hell" which is hands down the best line, is the quote in the begining of "Medal Of Honor" ...a video game

I've heard things with a similar message to the last line of this before, but to my knowledge the poem as a whole is original.

All in all, its really good. The rhythym is held well, the simple rhyme scheme really suits the poem. However, theres just one criticisms I have. The idea of the soldier having done his time in hell isnt really built up in the poem. Until the last couplet, it seems to be about how he has conducted himself, and so the message seems a bit seperated from the rest of it to me.
