Footprints In the Snow
Footprints;
footprints in the snow;
some with small heels,
some with large heavy treads,
some with smooth characterless soles,
some with Disney characters,
some large,
some small,
and a whole universe of them
somewhere in between.
Some footprints are endowed with an anesthetized purpose:
they are straight and true,
unwavering;
these footprints waste not,
want not,
feel not,
see not,
and hear not.
Some foot prints meander about,
making circles and ovals,
revolving,
oscillating,
rotating about a vaporous axis,
wondering,
seeking,
wanting,
desiring,
and needing to know.
Others wander,
zig-zagging,
unguided,
hither and dither;
sometimes running,
sometimes plodding,
sometimes leaping great distances;
these footprints pursue unseen things
with great desperation;
and then,
they stop.
Footprints;
footprints in the snow;
they tell the tale of mankind,
and like mankind's tale,
come the next cold and wintry storm,
or the next season of warmth,
they disappear,
and except for their memory,
are gone,
forever.
