RAIN ... THE FORCE OF DESTRUCTION !

Contributed by akshay on Monday, 7th January 2008 @ 05:44:18 PM in AEST
Topic: NaturePoetry

I clutched my bag closer
Hurrying my footsteps homewards ( as if I had commited a crime )
My plaits had become loose , my laces were untied
But who cared...as long as I reached home in time....

I jogged along the mountain road
All around people knew what was in store
Women were pulling clothes off the lines
While their men gathered sheeps...
....and hearded them inside the stable door

I looked at the sky ( all dark and silent )
The black blanket of clouds had wrappped up the sun
The lights had dimmed , the wind was quiet
It was the lull before the storm

And as I stepped in my porch
All hell broke loose over our small town
It was as if the sky had been ripped apart
And the water of Ganges was pouring down ( Ganges is a holy Indian river which makes it's way through heaven )

The clouds were like an army over our hills
They thundered , they roared , the bellowed
They came down ruthlessly over our tin roofs
They eroded away our muddy twisting roads

It seemed as though the hills themselves would crumble
The way rain came down ...fast , furious and commanding
We could hear the animals bellowing and babies crying
But nature paid no atention...it was insistent ...it was demanding.

Our little river swelled up
It's water overflowing it's ghat (ghat is the hindi word for "shore" )
It moved like a wild dragon , angry and possessed
Destroying everything that crossed her path

It pulled down trees , washed away houses
Caried away men and animals in it's arm
The rain was her master , encouraging her
To wash away all that had caused the mountain harm

And finally afte five days of rage and destruction
The tempest subsided , the river slowed down
We knew not whether to praise or fear...
The naked force of nature that had blessed out little town......
...........blessed our little town
