There once was a boy
That didn’t know why.
The question he asked was
“Why can’t I cry?”
He asked around town
He asked far and wide.
But no matter whom he asked
They always replied:
“We don’t knw why you can’t cry.
Go ask your mom and dad.
They usually know the answer
When a problem is had.”
So he asked mom and dad
And they showed their love.
His mom and dad knew the answer,
Well sort of.
“The question you ask
Is not easy you see
For understanding the answer
Is no guarantee.”
They said that as a baby,
The doctors had found
That when he was injured
He made not a sound
When poked or prodded
He made not a cry.
His parents said
Concluding with a sigh.
“The doctors had said
‘There isn’t much to say
Your child can’t cry
Not today or any other day.’
‘But why can’t he cry?’
His parents did ask
To this the doctors
Showed them a flask
‘This flask contains
Your child’s last tears
This is a thing
That we haven’t seen in all our years.’
“And so we’ve kept this flask
In a safe place.
It’s up in the attic
In a small yellow case.
The doctors did say
That you had simply run out
‘But how could that happen!’
We did shout
“How could I run out
They’re just tears?
And how come I haven’t been told
All of these years?”
You had run out of tears
But we didn’t know why,
The doctors weren’t sure either
And so we didn’t know why you couldn’t cry.
And so you’ve lived your life
Without sorrow or despair.
And until you asked us,
You didn’t seem to care.
The boy didn’t understand
But his parents said with a shout
“When you get older
You will find out!”
With this, this part of the story
Has come to a finish
Without the rest of the story
The overall theme does diminish.
This story is sad
That much I know as true
Just be careful that
It does not happen to you.
