ode to the gull-able

When I was two feet, I was king of the world
and I owned the east coast of New Jersey,
I would sail on the clouds
and would follow the crowds
and I hoisted a pink and blue burgee.
I skimmed over land where the dunes made of sand
would be used by the kids to make castles,
their mamas would hover
to make sure the kids cover
with robes hemmed by green and white tassles.
The coast I would sail, meaning south I would sail,
Passing Mannasquan, Barnaget Light,
From Sandy Hook Bay
All the way to Cape May
With gulls joining me in the flight.
We rested in marshes near coves and dry washes
and all much too light to sink down,
Then off we would fly
We would blacken the sky
as we passed over town after town.
What joy I would feel. Was it dream? Was it real?
Soon the Cape May canal was in sight,
I waived to an erne
and began my return
For I had to be back before night.
"Back where", you might ask, "and what was my task?"
Well, I had to return to my crib,
I was safe as could be
with a blanket on me
and tucked tightly in with my bib.
When I tripled in size as you might surmise.
On the truth of my trips, no one speaks,
Yet if I walk the sand
of a New Jersey strand,
The gulls nod to me with their beaks.

Hello Norm,
Very good, I love it. It reminds me of the poem , Wynken, Blyken, and Nod......by Eugene Field. So well written. I love the way it flows. #05 in my book. I will have to visit your site more often for sure. Thank you for your wonderful treat. Made my morning. I was raised here in New Jersey.....tho born in New York. But home is always where the heart is.:)
