slowly he falters

the sound of the morning herd dropping coffee cups in there wake
and the chatter of zombies not yet fully awake
the young man wakes another day of starvation and empty walls
he picks his blanket from the cold pavement and starts his decline of his fall
from empty parks to darkened doors he pushes his dreams with his cart
the problem he faces every day from suicide to addiction crime to sorrow
holding his head trying to be strong in the face of this unpleasant time
bath in the sink wrinkled resumes and hope to do better he makes his way
from shop to shop the same old story no address no work no phone no call
slowly he walks by the office a check could be his if he wanted that help
but he knows that way is a double bladed sword and help is only a deep as it cuts
and asking is beyond him he walks back to his door step trying to stand tall
his home for another night with dreams of freedom he closes his eyes
another day to try again tomorrow if the cold doesn't eat him first
the sirens sing in the night the streets so empty in the twilight
he hears a rustling down the street drunks let from the holes they live
full of anger and spite against the world
he tries to not move mabey this time they will pass
another day in the hospital will not help him to his goal
but he knows the truth of the street he has no help and no forgiveness
and no one has respect he fells the burn a sharp pain in his side
the rush of warmth fills his head and his chest
childhood memories fill his head of happier times
his mother still alive his father still in jail
he remembers slowly he falters but
he closes his eyes

Heart breaking. How do some become so lost? Great thought-provoking piece. I don't understand how some folks live with intense riches, while others falter. It seems to me, things are hugely unbalanced in this world.
Much peace and hugs,
Laura |
