“Homeless Christ”
Copyright © 2005 Deb Hoeffner, http://www.debhoeffner.com.
In the United States, more than 800,000 people are homeless on any given day, with 2.3 million to 3.5 million experiencing a period of homelessness over the course of a year.
THE DEAD WALK IN SANTA MONICA!
along dark streets to fish-stained pier
mumbling sweet nothings
to city’s deafened ears
THE FORGOTTEN DWELL IN CHICAGO!
and huddle to their place
pleading for their alms
according to their race
THE WEIRD RISE IN ALBUQUERQUE!
and beg their meagre prize
through spectacle and cajolery
and spinning desperate lies
LOST SOULS HAUNT AMERICA!
in every city and town
yet eyes are turned to borders
as pennies are laid down.

Interesting format and image, I like.
Yes, it's a sad thing. Of course, in 99.99999999999% of the cases, drug abuse is to blame. The coldness of American popular culture reaches to the hearts of these folks too - finding expression in livid anger a lot of the time. Helping the homeless here can be dangerous; I admire the folks who dare to make it their priority. There's no easy answer. The common person can't do much more than buy coffee for a homeless person, for in too many cases it's not safe to do much more. Until enough of us have changes of heart down at the home level, and drugs are not seen as an answer to bad relationships or poor life-choices, we're stuck with the zombies of our mindset staring at us from the street corners.

I don't know what Jesus would do,Spike,
but I know what he would think.
"Two thousand years,and nothing changes"
He'd probably be tailed by the FBI and then sent,by some lunatic,to meet Martin Luther King.
To return from a US holiday and post a poem such as this, speaks volumes of the man.
As Cowboy would say, 'Tip o' the hat'

I love the unique formatting, they remind me of news headlines or newsflashes as if to alert the reader yet at the same time question us because we all know these stories, but how many of us actually do anything about it?
Homelessness is a difficult issue to combat, you have presented your ideas expressively and powerfully. Good write!

So true Terry, so true, yet......In the state of Texas, you can be homeless and live on the streets, legally, yet: if you apply for Government help, YOU must have a legal address, makes no sense, huh? Im in Texas, an d sees so many homeless all the time,. Shelters are over flowed with people who can not help. them self. Well, I agree with your write, but......its the darn govt, that wouldnt. Good post

I am Ms compassionate to the homeless yet one day in the streets of Toronto as I walked with my older sister, me full of pity, sis did bring up a good point....
well they don't have to pay rent or taxes now do they? or heating or water...no bills if you have no address...don't need a job to pay bills. Just move about doing as you please...lots of handouts.
Still...I fall vulnerable. Even if it is due to addiction of any kind...they are sick and hurting..someone (when they are ready)has got to care enough to get them back to life.
Many programs for addiction are led by someone who was helped back to life... humans who have since prooved saving them was sooooo....worthwhile . In return now they are ready to save anothers soul.
Great topic...so powerfully put and proof of your compassion. |
