Excuses

One day I asked the Lord in prayer, “Oh, Lord, what can I do?”
He said, “My child I’m glad you asked and soon I’ll speak to you.”

That night He came to me and said, “I have a job that’s fun!
They need a teacher for a class and I know you’re the one.”

“But Lord, it would be twice a month and that’s too much for me.
I want to help but I don’t think I’m a teacher, can’t You see?”

So many days went by before I heard from Him again.
He said the Nursery needed help and I was one to train.

“But Lord, those babies scream so loud, I don’t think that’s my call.
And dirty diapers I can’t stand, that’s not for me at all.

A month went by before He spoke of something else to do.
He told me they could use my help on the Saturday cleaning crew.

“But Lord, my Saturdays are so full and I must clean my house.
That day I’ve set aside for just my children and my spouse.”

A year went by before He spoke of a need that I could fill.
He wanted me to cook and clean for someone who was ill.

“But Lord, I just don’t have the time for I must work all day.
But one thing I can do for them is take the time to pray.”

Then the Day of Judgment came and before the Lord I stood.
“Now tell me Child, what you have done that you have thought so good.”

“Oh Lord, not much but the things You said, they really were so small.
I waited for the bigger things, but they never came at all.”

The Lord, He spoke and chastised me for excuses, I’m to blame.
In not doing all the little things, the big things never came.

And then He asked me where I would be if His only Son
Had made excuses not to die just as I had done.

And hearing this, I felt ashamed and hung my head and cried.
For I would not be standing here if Jesus had not died.

And so I hope you’ll do the things that God has called you to,
So when you stand before the Lord, He’ll say “well done” to you.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
