Strength To Survive

Contributed by Bizzy on Friday, 7th March 2003 @ 01:00:00 AM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

All that life is to me...
is what it is in my head.
Sewage-gray ugliness swirls like a sea;
and I wish I could stop it,...
be done with this dread.

Foolishness, evil, sorrow, and grief,
have stolen the sunshine away like a thief.
In a nightmare pit of horror and gloom,
I struggle and kick at impending doom.

Oh, my life may look quite different to you,
and what you see may be just as true;
for how I affect you in the things I do,
is what's important in your point of view.

I don't like this junk that buries my life;
my life lies beneath this struggle and strife.
I will not die, defeated this way;
I'll kick and I'll scream 'till I'm withered and gray!

Without denial of these black things that stay,
I'm trying to find some good in today.
I know somewhere there are stairs to the light
where I can climb
above my fright.

My life isn't just
what swims in my head,;
Not the hell of the past
that howls like the dead.
My life is a spark
that lives down deep.
It has strength to survive,
though the climb is steep.

G.F.R. Coykendall, 1988
