They call me a brain worm;
I get inside your head—
I take the best and worst of you
And feed until I’m fed.
And every mind a vibrant dish
The world a grand buffet;
A feast the least creative cease
To join into the fray
Sweet Amity, fine Elegance
With just a pinch of Spice:
The flare of Flair to wash it down—
Desert, of course, is Vice.
And now I’ve names for every part
Each meal, a marked prize
Nutrition for the hollow heart
Oft makes the best disguise.
Yet when a fearful famine strikes
And all my meals are naught,
Starvation grays my precious hoard
Alone, I’m soon distraught.
For all my flesh I’ve built from scratch
As soon should disappear
When everything I’ve gained is lost
There lies my hidden fear:
You see, the spine of every soul
Sustains them when in need
They seek no source to draw upon
For skeletons don’t bleed.
Oh, I agree, the brittle bone
Supports as well as breaks
And little me, the wily worm
Will never risk those stakes
But as I feel my feast subside
As all not mine is lost
A nagging, silent fear appears
For I too pay a cost
For I can mold in any way
And change my shape, my heft
But should I ever starve one day
Would anything be left?

Nutrition for the hollow heart
Oft makes the best disguise.
I absolutely loves those two lines....I mean I like the entire poem but those two lines seemed to reach out and grab me by the throat.
Speaking of grabbing by the throat... not sure what "inspired" this but it is a cool poem. Gripping. Dark and interesting. Dark imagery and I am not sure I will sleep well tonight as I will lay in fear of this damn brain worm paying what is left of my brain a visit. I have this nagging feeling it's been here before.
Excellent poem.
Thanks,
Tim

"Sweet Amity, fine Elegance

It does seem a parasite gets into your head and eats away at your thoughts and feelings sometimes, leaving you dead inside. Such a great analogy, and so deftly written. I love the way you write. |
