The Enemy Within - Vona Marengo
In sewers of the self,
to breed with no regard
the enemies of the One
arise with rusty swords
To thrust and stab again,
each wound itself so small
a thousand tiny cuts
to bleed the tender soul
When the world is as it is,
they take the hurt and pain
to grow it out of size
and throw it back again
Each victory a defeat,
every failure justified
the ill in every good
to taint the hope inside.

A very stylized point of view, that I can still manage to relate to. It's so real, yet hard to comprehend. Nicely done. |

Such depth in four, short stanzas. Why is it that we magnify hurt and pain? It's as though we need turmoil within to survive.Maybe that's just me.
That author's note? Sally Kempton is one, shrewd lass.Always a treat to come here and never disappointed.

At times it seems the pain and hurt seems to over ride the lighter notes in life, to bad it wasn't the other way around.
As always a powerful and fine crafted write.

Wow Spike, I'm sort of blown away. First of all the quote and picture, makes me tremble, maybe because I can understand, I can relate. God, you've touched upon something so astronomical to some of us, and you've done it brilliantly with few words.
(I know I oft feel I'm my own worst enemy) Some days it is such a struggle to keep afloat, and your last stanza, well it was very strong.
Great title as well, my friend.
Much peace and hugs,
Laura |

(That picture gave me one horrific headache)
yes ... the enemy within. Kinda hard to fight off when it attacks from all fronts at once, eh? That very first
line ... damn! "sewers of the self" that says so much right there. Why do we beat ourselves up? Why do we
forgive in others, sins we break our own spirits for? I mean, in essence, what TRULY, have we got against
ourselves? Perfectionists. And it adds up to a lot of stress and therapy, my dear poet.
Hope rises. It always does. Regardless of how tainted it becomes. And I am convinced, (beyond
any doubt!) of that truth. If I do not know anything else, I know this. Hope prevails.
Excellent post, aussie. A "thinking" poem.

Yes very, very powerful post. Many can relate what hurts, and what is pain. Touched the inner here, seems you think the hurt is gone, yet the pain gets deeper. Great write.

To start a poem with such an immensely powerful quote and image, well you just know you're in for a great read!
Even when surrounded by encouragement it is still commonplace to self-criticise and doubt yourself. Sometimes I find that when I start to self-doubt that's all I need to spur me on and prove myself wrong, so on occasion it can be beneficial. Other times however the doubts can be so great that it feels easier to give up completely. Happily I don't find those phases as common or long-term, but it is a draining and deadening experience.
Very good write, extremely relatable.
