OLD SAM
I WALK THIS STREET LIKE I ALWAYS DO,
SOUTH ON WESTLAND TWENTY-TWO.
WHERE LIES THIS HOUSE ON AN ACRE OF GROUND,
WHICH NEVER SEEMS TO HAVE ANYONE AROUND.
DRAPES ARE DRAWN, AND THE LIGHTS ARE DIM,
CHANCE OF A WELCOME MAT LOOKS PRETTY SLIM.
BUT IN THIS HOUSE LIVES A LITTLE OLD MAN,
KNOWN THROUGH OUT, AS INSANE OLD SAM.
LOST HIS WIFE IN AN ACCIDENT FIVE YEARS AGO,
IT EFFECTED HIM MORE THAN ANYONE COULD KNOW.
SEEMS SAM WAS DRINKING & DRIVING THE NIGHT OF THE TALE,
AND HIS POOR OLD WIFE DIDN’T FAVOR NEARLY AS WELL.
WHEN HIS CAR SLID OFF THE ROAD HE WAS ON,
THROUGH A FENCE AND INTO A POND.
I CAN STILL REMEMBER HEARING THE SIRONS AGLOW,
EVEN THOUGHT IT SEEMED SO LONG AGO.
EVERY SINCE THAT DAY OLD SAM HASN’T BEEN THE SAME,
HE STAYS COOPED UP IN HIS HOUSE TO DEAL WITH HIS PAIN.
HE NEVER COMES OUT, AND ALLOWS NOBODY IN,
HE LIVES IN DARKNESS TO PAY FOR HIS SIN.
HE’S SORROW AND LONELINESS CONTINUES TO GROW,
AND HE’S LOST MORE THAN HE’LL EVER KNOW.
I FORGIVE YOU OLD MAN FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE,
I HOPE SOMEDAY WE CAN GO BACK TO BEING FATHER & SON.
