US general damns Iraq 'nightmare'
BBC - Saturday October 13, 2007
A former US military chief in Iraq has condemned the current strategy in the conflict, which he warned was 'a nightmare with no end in sight'.
Retired Lt Gen Ricardo Sanchez also labelled US political leaders as 'incompetent' and 'corrupted'.
He said they would have faced courts martial for dereliction of duty had they been in the military.
The best the US could manage under the current approach in Iraq was to 'stave off defeat', Gen Sanchez warned.
'There is no question that America is living a nightmare with no end in sight,' he said, addressing journalists at Arlington, near Washington.
Sanchez comes with a history,
that cannot be denied
He presided over Abu Ghraib
with Rumsfeld by his side
Still and all he was there,
in Iraq when the going was rough
So his views count for something
and on Bush & Co, he’s pretty tough
‘Incompetent’ and ‘corrupted’,
these are two of his well-chosen words
‘Dereliction of duty’,
a few more for the White House birds
He calls the surge a “desperate attempt”
and the best may be to “stave off defeat”
He is now an outsider, an independent
and seems willing to take the heat
We must decide, is this just sour grapes?
A career that went into decline and dived
Or is he telling the simple truth
of how the tragedy of Iraq arrived?
