Totem

Contributed by Willofree on Friday, 12th October 2007 @ 09:00:01 AM in AEST
Topic: mystical

Skyward it reaches,

grounded in earth at its feet.

With an upper connection to the heavens,

a special artistic story, to cast a spell.

Its creation has a supernatural history to tell.

Its messages passed for generations,

magically its shape is transformed.

From the birth of a tree, to an artists sculpturing.

Created by a masterful technique of artistic symmetry.

A special story each segment told,

the remnants of a culture from ages ago.

A special part of history as told by their pole,

all about life and survival, a long time ago.

Some to worship in a pagan manner,.

yet special meaning they find.

For our ancestors, a holy shrine

in the special wood carved totem pole they designed.

I'm interested in knowing the inspiration for this piece as well. Not your typical poetry fodder. History, art, religious symbolism... all in one wonderful subject. Well captured Mr Terry.

Will, first I want to say, what a GREAT title!! It captured my attention,
straight away Secondly, the piece itself, is such a glorious tribute to
totem poles. I am not so gifted with intellect that I would dare to
say I understand the poles themselves, (though I've heard many
a story as to what they represent), but still, they hold such enormous
fascination, do they not? My great-grandmother was ojibwe and they had
(originally) six principle totems; the crane, catfish, bear, marten,
wolf, and loon. I don't know a lot about the tribe, but I do know
they were a very spiritual people and respected Mother Earth
with a ferocity.

Damn, this piece is exceptional. I love the feel of this piece and the
light it sheds on the beauty of the "Totem".

Thanks for sharing this will. Made my day. =)
