1950'S TRAVEL

Topic: Nostalgic

1950 Travel

Standing in the station
For the six eighteen
The engine at the front
Hissing, smoke and steam

The air was heavy laden
With the smell of smoke and soot
Then came an announcement
The train has gone Kaput

I ran up to the starting gate
My ticket in my hand
“Sorry mate there’s been a change
It’s on another stand”

Hordes of people charged once more
To a new departure site
When we all arrived there
The train had taken flight

A new train was reversing in
To take the last one’s place
Is that the one for “Newcastle”?
‘Well!!! Up to now it is’

The ticket collector’s outstretched hand
A scowl upon his face
You’d think we were all animals
Not of the human race

I found a corner window seat
To look out upon the view
With journey’s end so far away
I took some sweets to chew

The sun was shining brightly
As we rattled through the land
A tea trolley was dragged along
It was, their “special” brand

The sandwiches were all curled up
The pies tomorrow’s bricks
I guess they’ll all just have to do
For us out in the sticks

Journeys end is now in sight
We pull into the station
All the families waiting there
To start the celebration
