One of us in drag
We decided to split up
I walked further from familiar streets
Went up Mill Ave. looking for drugs and water
Stretching the lights of the cars and the people
With beautiful furniture dancing naked in the windows
And restaurants
I met a girl named half pint who
Sang rolling soul stained songs
To strangers for money in a cup
She gorgeous in the soft drizzle of a tattered purple dress
With leather boots and the memory of a smile
Sold on her smile
I left her gradually
Troubled by the need of a high
Wounded by the strength in her eyes
I left her, defeated
Having measured the weight of my heart
By the weight of her cup
And coming up short
I heard she died later
Cold and alone in
An old run down house
To be mentioned once or twice
In the histories of my life
That night, I found water and drugs
Regrouped and walked home
For a girl called half pint
Alive or dead
You showed me, in a half hours time,
By your slow stifled song
The love of a life lost
For the love of the world
Love always—and in my thoughts forever—
Abraham.
