Where Frida Dwells

'I hope the exit is joyful and I hope never to return.'
Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón
(artist, Mexicon icon 1907-1954)

Frida lies in spectral hues
where paintings arrow to the soul;
not a purgatory of pain
with vertebrae like broken shells
not the scorch of love’s betrayal
—a place where hearts are true and kind
where fires burn away the dark,
and rouse the spark in winter’s mind

when Frida dreams, the world’s remade;
no iron through flesh and maidenhead
a place of songs to stir the blood
and not the prison of her bed
nor the torturous trap of frame,
the quicksand of a thousand words
—where trust is nurtured like the lamb,
and ideas soar like pretty birds

no more the study of her grief,
a life displayed as real and strange
broader strokes of long relief
are now the symbols of her range
gone now, hungers never quenched,
nor pining for the selfish soul;
no more the agony that swells
—for Frida, in the world she dwells.

Spike,
What a wonderful write. I am not familiar with her works, but now you have piqued my curiosity. I shall definitely check out this beautiful lady, you have written so elegantly about. Thanks for sharing and opening up my world a little more.
Much peace, love and hugs,
Laura

I've read her bio, quite a woman with much pain in her life. I'll have to check out more of her paintings.
You do her honor indeed with this tribute!

Beautifully written. I have seen the movie and am familiar with her work. An amazing woman.... with an amazing story. Thanks for writing such a wonderful piece about such an extraordinary artist.

I haven't seen the movie, and I'm only vaguely familiar with her work, but you write with such enthusiasm that it makes me want to go onto Google now and find pictures so I can understand the influence they've had on you and your writing.
Wonderfully written, I love the imagery and rhythm.

Dom
