kill your darlings...

In this writing assignment, each stanza follows 7-5-7-5 word pattern, line by line. This poem is inspired by a William Faulkner quote, who when asked if he had any advice to poets, said "kill your darlings". The idea of stripping away unecessary words, phrases, stanzas etc. to "find the poem" really appeals to me. Rather than adding/decorating more material, the art is in stripping away material similar to how a sculpter works. Allowing yourself to let go of material that you might find inspirational or worthwhile is important if the poet wishes to go beyond what he has already achieved.
kill your darlings, those muddled and cluttered
paper rocks--kill them lovingly
sparing only the jagged edges joined partially
by a spider's single strand
rearrange and unwind skeptical scavengers before holding
in your palm, a message
which lies behind language, the old man
staring silently, a delicate profile
wrinkled and amused, being blind, hardly remembers
these darlings, and while hidden
his cold grey skin darkens when sung
in poems, stories, old memories
swept away like childhood, the quiet neighborhood
forgotten, reinvents itself in death,
and like birth, discovers who it was
before any reluctant thought occurred
