You tied him up and said your goodbyes,
Not realizing the sadness in his drooping eyes,
Wagging his tail, he tried to stand,
But you just left with a wave of your hand.
Tied to the unstable beam of the porch,
He lay there with eyes bright as a torch,
Perking ears when the wind sings strong,
Bitter cold and scorching heat throng,
Rugged rope imprinted around his neck,
Can't move from under the slowly collapsing deck,
The wind blows, that old house rocks,
The rain pours, that old house rots,
The lawn dies, the dirt engulfs it,
Impressions in the land still sit,
He reaches the full lengths of his rope,
Finds a puddle he can just barely gulp
No sustenance or food to be found around,
Small bugs scuttle on the concrete ground,
He lapse them up in one starving motion,
He waits for you with that puppy love emotion.
That old house is rotting away,
But under that unstable porch he does stay,
Each sound tickling his old dog senses,
But at this time he is utterly defenseless.
Rats chew at his foot, but he can't move an inch,
The rope round his neck is tighter pinched,
You will never return to that faithful dog's side,
Even when his ribs no longer appear inside.
Pieces of the porch fall a few times a day,
Until the whole deck just gives way.
He's trapped under the fallen mess,
But with his last bit of strength he does protest.
He lay for days, crushed from the outside in,
Staying alive from the soul love within
A few days pass; they will be his last,
Remembers those days that lingered in the past.
You threw the ball, he fetched it from afar,
You patted his head, while you smoked your cigar,
Two peas in a pod, never to be found apart,
'Til that day you decided to quickly depart.
His dropping eyes lose their flame,
And you are the one to blame,
His heart gives out, his lungs fall flat,
He lay crushed under the over mat,
You returned to that house a few years later on,
Found that the porch and your dog were gone,
Push away the rubble, find that one beam,
With that rope still tied at the seam.
You remember that day, the day that you left,
Tied him up and thought nothing of it,
He waited for you, til he could wait no more,
You were his best friend the one he did adore.
Always there when there was no one else,
Even when your love for him was false.
He sat there and waited for you to return,
Days, months, and years had turned.
In his heart he knew you'd come,
Even if it was long after he was done,
You left him, but he never left you,
His unconditional love never flew.
