The Race

Contributed by kiss4roq on Wednesday, 29th August 2007 @ 12:37:16 PM in AEST
Topic: DarkPoetry

All crouched at the starting line
Racing for what is so divine
Each of us numbered, like a day of the week
Seeing our futures within a few feet

Staring at each other with bloodshot eyes
Waiting for that one small chance to arise
Sweat dripping out of every last pore
All reaching for that one perfect score

On the stand the emerald flag drops
We take off fast as each heart stops
Two, three, four at a time
Watching as the meters climb

First one around the bend,
The meter descends,
Then once again as fast as he can
Just as the others are making a stand

My heart begins pumping
The meter is jumping
I need to go fast
I just can not be last

Around the next bend, I pick up the speed
A little bit faster, that’s all that I need
Second in line, almost there
Passed up by someone with a little more flare

A race to the finish, it’s all in plain sight
The trophy on stand gleaming bright
All crunched together, just ‘til the end
I picked up speed before the last bend

Cross over the finish and to my surprise
The race was life, and death was the prize
To race for so long, for the ultimate end
Makes us race faster along that last bend

One of the best poems that I have ever read on this site. You have a way with words that makes one want to read again and again. I shall be looking out for your works in future greetings from bern.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
