The 'Haunted' House

Contributed by Matteo93090 on Saturday, 11th August 2007 @ 12:26:16 PM in AEST
Topic: abstract

Slowly I crept towards that haunted house
Scattered around it, an old toy, a tattered blouse
Each step creaked as I climbed up the stairs
The wood was rotting, and the paint scraped bare
I was frightened that what laid inside was evil, was bad
But the mysterious home stood there as it always had
My courage picked up, and I pushed open the door
My eyes laid upon sights never seen before
Dark as it was, I made out the shapes
A filthy old couch, and moth eaten drapes
An old dusty clock, a moldy old rug
The mystery of Old gave my curiosity another tug
The more I explored, the more enticed I became
The décor all matched, yet nothing was the same
Each piece of furniture told a story of its own
Each blanket and sheet was lovingly sewn
This place was not evil, as many had told me
False were the stories my neighbors had sold me
This place was a home to a family, nothing more
They ran down these stairs, they walked on these floors
They laughed over meals, told stories in the den
All the kids were tucked in at a quarter past ten
So why are they different, this family and I?
We both loved, we both laughed, we both suffered and cried.
So why was it haunted? Why was it forbidden?
Why was the true story of this house so carefully hidden?
And then it hit me, like a ton of bricks from these walls.
There was no malice, no evil at all.
It was the fear that we share of what we don’t comprehend.
When we don’t know the truth, we lie and defend
Our beliefs that what is unknown can’t possibly be good.
Mysterious means wrong and unnatural, that’s understood.
But my friends, I strongly disagree.
The best things in life are difficult to see
You have to look deeper, and find out for you
You have to understand that these houses have good stories too.
