Similarities

Of this world and mine
The similarities disgust me.
Distinct disconnection from those unfamiliar
Mixed in whole
With the consuming disregard
Of any respect, any faith
In the humanity I have known.
The value of any given individual
With whom a characterless intimacy
Is shared in a one-sided falsehood
Gains enough momentum and force
To shatter in an inescapable tragedy.
Priorities shift by the moment
As bitterness delivers lies
Wrought with a fresh cynicism, telling
That not one connection
Between those who claim to love
Has a worth that approaches
The numbness of modern existence
All this thought
As physical space loses its features
Once intriguing, once alive
Each face losing its human value
The spoken sounds
Given just enough attention
To discourage doubt and worry
As internal versions cycle and fade
This is all of reality quantified
Defined in zero sums
Of motions practiced, and emotion displaced
Burnt in fullness by the sun
During the summer of extremes
Showing just what I have become
I am no longer a man of decency
Of principles or pain
I cannot see the suffering of others
I am everything I hate,
Or remember hating
Yet I am the way the world works.
