I came to you once for the bone.
It was on the porch
where a person could
sit and gaze at kids
playing gypsy games
near where the bought
lawns sided with
pavement;
that's what you told me. Master.
You said that was where
buttpant prints could be
preserved, right there on
the porch and no mailman
or woman would step on it;
preserved until the next butt sat on it.
You said those prints,
like the bone, meant
something old in this
brave new world,
something tangible
among those finely
trimmed bushes;
something that stayed a little while longer.
But, I didn't see it. Master.
All I saw was the gray, gray
waves of grass and smelt
morning mildew, dirt, with
a bit of garbage from the
trashcan where cats sleep
and when I got to the porch
there was only sand;
the kind from many years ago that never move.
The bone lay quiet and still
and didn't look like those
ones I see on boxes. It
was jagged with meat in
between each of its jagteeth;
it was a morsel to me. Master.
You also told me that
on the porch there was
once another man like me
and he was looking for the bone;
waiting to get a hold of it in his jaws.
But once that poor guy
did he became marrow himself.
His head shrunk low against
his shoulders and body
looked nailed to the ground
and his eyes were bruise,
his teeth were brittle and
his nose wept water;
a man fastened to a wall with a plaque.
You warned me. Master.
Yet I still grabbed it
and now as I lay
on this table, in this
bright gray room,
with a young girl
holding the syringe
that she'll use to
puncture my skin;
I still think about those buttprints.
