It's 2:08 and I'm stone cold sober
drive alone in the rain, baby I'm coming over
I've made this trip so many times,
yet now I'm older and it's not the same
we're not the same two people anymore
behind your door, hidden lies
found myself staring into your cocaine eyes
staring like a deer in the headlights, waiting to get hit
but I'm over it, I can no longer do this
but back then,
It was black coffee, but it tasted sweet
It was me on the guitar, with you listening at my feet
It was the only reason we smiled, the only time we ever felt alive,
now ask yourself how do you really feel, was it ever really real?
It's 4:00 am and you're pacing around the room
you're talking nonsense, and I'll be going soon
You're living in the past, covering regret
I've moved on, I've grown, I'm done with it
We're not teenagers anymore my baby
we've all grown up and now don't you think that maybe
you should put down that little baggy of white powder
because I miss the boy I used to know but if I have to I'll go on without him
In the end I was stronger, it was just a passing phase
but you got lost so deeply, it will never be the same
You think your worlds messed up if you are not messed up
and I can't put up with it, I've had enough
but back then,
It was black coffee, but it tasted sweet
It was me on the guitar, with you listening at my feet
It was the only reason we smiled, the only time we ever felt alive,
now ask yourself how do you really feel, was it ever really real?

Very emotional read. Sounds like someone has grown a good strong backbone and moved to where the sun shines brighter.
I like the repetition of the black coffee lines....it made me almost see you...the way you penned this. Excellent conveyance of what it feels like trying to live, love and support someone with an addiction. I've learned along the way...sometimes you can't help...you just got to move on, and yeah it is hard and it sucks. Best of luck with your journey.
Much peace to you,

Wow! Having been on both ends of that, oddly enough, I can really relate. Such intense emotion in your poem, took me right back there. Good work! : ) |

Terrific post. I do understand why you'd drop it in the category you did - but I think it would have fit in the Song Lyrics category just as well. There's a melody to this... and no matter how many times I look at it, I can't seem to do so without the melody presenting itself to me.
There are some great lines here as well. End to end, it's very well constructed with nuances that serve to paint an incredibly clear picture in the reader's mind. It was, very much, like reading lyrics and getting a mental video along with it. 2:08 a.m., 4:00 a.m., black coffee, flashbacks to the guitar... the two subjects... in the wee hours... the long night... it's all here. Moreover, it's a telling of a journey - and the sad truth that one made it through to the other side but the other has not fared as well.
There's so much here. I'm quite impressed at how well you've managed to present it and how effortlessly you seemed to do so. If you're not already - you should be proud of this. It really is quite something.
Excellent piece. It leaves me thinking that I should be reading more of your work.
