Do not enter, read all the signs.
All the signals sent from within,
tell me it's too late to start over again.
So I opt to take the familiar route,
for this behavior keeps me safe inside and out.
Never allowed to exit at the front,
too uncertain is the future.
Only allow a fraction of emotions inside,
shade drawn to shield the turmoil within.
Do you really think I would risk vulnerability?
Ask, how that would make me feel,
as I peek from behind the shade?
I see someone peering back at me,
further probing questions asked.
Question is, will I stay or flee?
Is the shade drawn to avoid disclosing matters,
or to inhibit information from escaping?
Yet grasping for something, anything,
but too threatened to self-disclose.
My portal to the outside world will not be disclosed.
I feel defensive as the questions intensify,
and draw the shade even further.
What do they want from me?
Just keep it simple and trite and I will be all right.
Life seems easier if I keep my world small.
Ok, ok, I scream. Stop firing all the questions at me!
Can't you see the pain it causes me?
I choose feeling safe over feeling free.
You look and ponder...
will I ever pull the shade open further, you wonder?

Wil, I don't think there is anything you've written yet, that I've read that I did not
stop and ponder. You do an absolute maddening to the heart, my friend.
It is difficult to tell just how much (or how little) anyone lets us see within
their own protected world. You have conveyed that most effectively here, as well
as shared an insight to what might be going on within the mind of someone who
is desperate to keep most parts of themselves hidden.
This gripped my soul, you know. There have been so many occasions where I
thought I knew someone, only to be tormented later with the reality that they
only showed me what it was they wanted me to see. It makes it hard to trust
anything or anyone. Well written piece, my friend. Glad to see you here again. :)
