I Told You I Would Make You Cry

I told you I would make you cry
the day you asked to be my love,
that, in my heart, I am an ---,
and you don’t stand a ------- chance.
I looked forward to our pleasantries,
and waited for your face,
but never once did see a friend,
only customers in my place.
But still you saw the best in me,
and sold me as a saint
and never did I shut your mouth
when you had a complaint.
So on it went, and on it grew,
this self-deluded love,
which manifested jealousy
and unrequited desperation.
Manifested look-alikes
for you to date instead,
without my wisdom, gall or drive,
to sate your rosy head.
And in a bleeding instant,
after months and months of shame,
I shed all recognition
of your god-forsaken name.
And I pulled you into solitude
to break your porcelain heart
and by the bard, Beelzebub,
it was a sacred art.
I cast aside illusions
and cemented you in truth,
and dropped you, cold and naked,
in a lake of burnt vermouth.
And though you made your way to shore,
It hasn’t been the same.
There’s guilt in every drop of voice
when you must call my name.
And I never meant to damage you,
but felt I had no choice,
but to prove that I would make you cry,
to prove that I’m an ---.
