The Soldiers Pass

Contributed by needledancing on Saturday, 26th May 2007 @ 12:35:40 PM in AEST
Topic: war

Pieces of our life fitting together like a jigsaw puzzle
reminding us how fragmented we can be.
Time dances through space carrying us like a wind blown chime.
In the mist of all tragedy lie our rays of hope.
Our memories feed us like a wounded hungry beast of survival.
Who chooses the marching soldiers who shall protect us?
How gallant and glowing he now marches as he guards our future gate.
Farewell my brave sons, I will sleep the motherless sleep of all my sisters.

OMG that picture at the Wall. Haunting. I hate war. I wish there was no such thing. I don't understand all the fighting and the hatred. I cannot imagine my son ever going off to war. What horror that must be for a Mother. I saw a bumper sticker today on a car that read "Half of my heart is in Iraq". Made me teary eyed as your poem did and the pic.
Much peace,
Laura

that picture gave me chills; on mothers day a lady near me was greeted at the door with news of her sons death. i hug my own sons and cannot wrap my mind around life without either of them, my young cousins husband was just sent back to iraq, i hate war. i do however love the talented poetess who penned this heartbreaking compassionate poem,

love n' hugs nessa

A wondeful tribute and beautiful heart breaking work ND! It is indeed tragic what people sacrifice especially when few really appreciate it or continue the ideals those men gave their lives to protect. While many bleed to grounds of foreign soil in wars they do not understand. Here at home the suits scrap over what it is they were truely fighting for. When all in all they were fighting so scraps wouldn't be necessary!

Well Done!

THis touches me so deeply. I cannot even imagine..... I do know of the worry have some young men off right now in the family, and I am not the mother but the aunt in the situation and a cousin in the other..... Leaves a flood of emotions in the wake of the storms of war. Yes we must remember them, and the mothers and the wifes..... what an example of strength they carry, bravery as well. I loved this poem and the pic brought a tear or two to my eyes.

hugeee hugs

Omigosh ND ... that picture. As Laura said, it is so painfully haunting.

Thank you for this. It is exceptional, not only in word, but in the
sentiment as well. I can't imagine what it's like to be waiting
for a loved one to come home from such a cruel atrocity.
You have captured a moment here ... a moment of pain,
need and hope. Excellent work poet! It's so sad that the fate
of so many can be decided by suits cosied up in their little offices.

Reminds me of "Facing it", by Yusef Komunyakaa. I don't get the word "motherless". Are you suggesting that you've lost your motherhood, or your mother? I think it would be stronger to make up a word there, like "desonned", or maybe "titleless". A powerful emotion. I'd like to see your take on the soldier's perspective next.
