Bring Me Back the Horse You Stole

Contributed by Lee on Wednesday, 23rd May 2007 @ 03:35:37 AM in AEST
Topic: SongLyrics

Rampaging, ghost town life

You cut the rope that held him tight

I was soaking in whiskey

In the saloon next door

When you had the bright idea

of stealing my trusted horse

I didn't notice it was gone

Until I woke up with a hangover at dawn

"You know, he's got a lot of distance to travel on."

Said the bartender, Shane McShawn

I set out on foot

into the desert where

I nearly died of heatstroke

and the humid air

Then I found a highway toll

You pay a silver dollar &

they let you go

Down s narrow road

Leading to that thieving goad

"I'll tell you once

Bring me back that horse

Or I'll sting your neck

With no remorse."

Ginger-like, he pushed

His cloak aside

Finger on the pistol

Meant for me to die

"But the hos' is mine

I got the papers paid in full."

Looks like I had followed the wrong guy

But just to be sure I asked if he knew the Golden Rule

He spoke back

"Undoubtedly, I sure do."

Then his holster went clackity-clack

Pistol quick to click

Ready to shoot me in the back

A sterling silver ransom paid

I dug the theif an early grave

Where he stood is where his body laid

He gave me back the horse I never gave

I was drinking whiskey

in another town's saloon

Someone said "Who's horse's

brand is shaped in a half-moon?"

I said it was mine

Then he said it was his

And he, too, gave me back

the horse I didn't give

The sheriff looked

around the room

That was then I knew

he knew

I had drawn my pistol

Before the dead men drew

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
