THE SARI

Dark lass on a lush green paddy field wrapped elegantly
in her darling red nine-yard sari, letting the pallu to
wave along the blooming field like a
fairy from the wilderness, offering water
walking charmingly with her jingling anklet,
a fresh breath among the tolling tired sweat soaked peasant.
Her cute innocent giggle, her wide dark
animated eyes spoke before her lip could utter
her heart’s content, her expressive hand covered
by tinkling bangles beckoned – as though, mesmerizing
enchantress conjuring the poor peasants’ eager soul to
subjugate, is this maid so beautiful or the sari she wore
made her the enchantress? Hard to say.
Yet the candor of it is the sari, so revealing yet mysterious
exposing woman with a degree of modesty.
translucent yet not - zeal to hold her, yet hold back, a sense of
veneration triggered within the gazer; that nine-yard starch of
cloth, just not a cloth but a magical transformer - from woman to
a goddess, a mother, an icon of passion and love or an enchantress.
Women in my land worshiped and adored, honored and loved
sold and bought like cattle too - and all wear saris too.

Indeed you capture the beauty of this garment. I find myself wishing I could try one on to see if I could feel the elegance and be magically transformed. Wonderful work my friend. |

I'm impressed how you've taken a garment and written
it into a beautifully enchanting and mysterious "essence".
I have quite often been intrigued by the garments worn
in different countries. Here in Canada, sari's are worn by
the immigrants from India still. (I always thought they
looked dreadfully hot in the summer, but was assured
they actually aren't, because the material breathes
better than some of our "western" clothing. lol).
I can't help but be just a little disturbed by the last line, though,
my friend. "sold and bought" IMHO, and without getting
religious or political here, there is just something terribly
wrong about the ownership of another human being.
Still, a wonderful piece of poetry, Franco. :)

Your poem seems to be focusing upon this garnet as a cuttural circumstance. So much can be represented by ones style of dress. That can make a real statement about an individuals status.
Excellant depcition of a cultural tradition

I was deeply moved by this Franco. The elegance and the beauty in this work are enormous and wonderful. Very informative. I have had acquaintances in my past from India and I am fascinated by your culture and by how peaceful a people many of you are. Though I still am not quite thrilled with the way some women are treated.
A wonderful and exquisite write about such an amazing culture. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful work of yours!
BRAVO!
