Beltane Rite

A magickal day, a magickal night
The Hornèd God comes to me crowned with light
The handprints in stag-blood on his chest
Signifies his place above the best
His body scent is that of earth
Of leaves on trees, of grass and dirt
Never do I call him by name
Lest I be cursed by him when he came
No, just “Lord” or “the God” will do
Say I, “I bow in awe and reverence to you.”
Still, he is but one half of the wheel
I present the other half which is just as real
I am the Goddess to his God
I am the ground which you have trod
The Rite is performed, the deed is done
If there were others, I noticed none
None but us in that darkling cave
Regardless of whatever they gave
To make this happen as it should
And pile up the Beltane wood
To make a fire burning bright
In the forest, in the night
I lie in wait for the Hornèd One
To be blessed by him in the dying sun
Nighttime now, I know who I’m not
I am not me, I’m the Goddess of you lot
The lot of you and your kith and kin
And now I know the Hornèd God comes in
Beside me he’ll lay, beside me he’ll cry
“I’m the King Stag, the King Stag must die!”
But after all is said and done
I’ll be a mere mortal in the rising sun
He, too, a mere man of flesh
Therein our fates may or may not mesh
But I as the Lady, and he as the Lord
Together we will strike a heavenly chord
Passion is nigh, and we, the hosts
Of the God’s and Goddess’s ghosts,
Will do the Rite worthy of praise
And after, to long hold the gaze
Of the ones who left us here after the kill
Blinded by love of earth and sky, still
We, mere mortals, will be hosts no more
When our friends come back through the cave door
And we will have done the Beltane Rite
Of the magickal day, the magickal night.

I enjoyed this very much. It
seems that Beltane is almost
upon us again. It is good to
find people on here who even
know about it. This work truly does
it justice, Great writing.
Truly , Doug
