THEY took it all away:
My culture, my religion,
My life, my dignity.
THEY took away my being,
Claiming that it was all for the better.
THEY took away my soul,
Telling me it was the soul of a demon.
THEY took away my aspirations for the future,
Correctly surmising that my future is no longer mine.
My life was no longer mine,
THEY told me I wasn’t capable of controlling my own life.
My religion ceased to exist,
THEY stated that I was going to hell for not being a Christian.
My culture began to vanish,
THEY called us dogs and savages.
My dignity was forcefully taken,
THEY stripped me until there was nothing left but a hollow shell.
THEY ruined my culture, religion, life and they stole my dignity.
THEY took it all and left me nothing.

Powerful poem.
I liked the repetition of the words culture, religion, life and dignity and the description of how each one was lost, because I feel that it increased the impact of the loss.
Personally I would have liked to have seen more description of 'them' and more of your feelings about their actions (although having them as an anonymous entity is effectively menacing). Just some comments I feel would enhance a poem I very much enjoyed reading.
Take care,
Dom |
