The World Can Be a Cold Place

Contributed by yackerz85 on Wednesday, 18th April 2007 @ 11:34:28 AM in AEST
Topic: SadPoetry

Alone again on the street tonight
With no place to go, no place to stay
I head down an alley where light
Casts a few shadows on the dirty ground.
A grizzled old man in rags stands by a fire
Which is inclosed by a metal barrel
He stretches out his cracked, warn hands
Attempting to feel a little warmth from the fire
As I approach, he looks at me through sullen eyes
And says, "The world can be a cold place."

Through more alleys I traverse this gloomy night,
Noticing my breath turning misty white
As I meander through the backwards places of town
A faint whimpering catches my attention
And a dog limps out from behind a dumpster.
He has no collar, no ID, and no purpose of existance.
Just a dirty fur coat and a will to survive
I stroke his head with my nearly frozen hands
And he returns the favor by licking them.
As if to say, "I feel your pain
This world can be a cold place."

Aimlessly I walk through the now empty streets
Past the marquee and closed shops
Only the street lights illumine my path
Like a flourescent white dream.
A soft crying is heard through the calm
It comes from a little girl and her mother.
Huddled together near a store entrance
Trying to sleep in the cold with only a thin blanket.
Through her sobs, she asks her mother
If she'll ever be warm again.
All I hear is, "Baby, the world can be a cold place."

Down the tracks I'm walking, hoping for a train
Or any sign of humanity in this cold hell.
And up ahead I see a flash and hear a gunshot.
Through the darkness, I see a body lying face down.
Blood is pooling around it in all directions.
There is a gun in his hand and a bottle of booze nearby.
I turn him over to see his face
Which reveals that he is a young man like me.
Searching through his pockets I find a note
Which I unfold and read to myself.
It said,
"I've lost hope in everything of this world.
I'm tired and cold and want to go home.
But I have no home. I have nobody and nothing.
So I'm going away to somewhere warm
Because anyplace is better than here,
This world was a cold place."

This was a chilling read, highlighting for me what life can become when it feels that all your hope has faded. Each of the stories in each stanza was saddening, and I hope this poem doesn't represent your state of mind at the moment, because there is much joy to be found in the world when you know how to look for it.
Your descriptions drew me right in, a very creative piece.
