We all hid the misfortune in a smile;
before we could breathe again, it took a while.
Everything was either blood-colored or gray:
the broken pieces—we’ll patch up this mirror someday.
Into the storm, and through the fire,
there was but one to reach out, to inspire.
All of our dreams were at once knocked out cold
because we were thinking of someone we could never let go.
We wanted to give up after pain and lost hopes,
but there was one creation so perfect in its scope
that Her likeness compared to no other being.
We were too blinded to believe what we were seeing.
Little by little, the seams ripped out, weak,
and sunlight streamed in, too bright for us to speak.
What turned out was an era so short, stunted, and rapid
it slipped away too fast before we could grasp it.
Life is a story one can never rewrite,
but this one is too good, so maybe we can try.
We’ll all take down notes before the final goodbye:
from the big farewell speeches, to the last tear in our eye.
When we read this bestseller again and again,
let us remember Her—the vision we never wanted to end.
As the picture fades into a dark night,
we'll watch the horizon for Her silhouette at first light.
