.
Man is born free, but not all have the option,
And privilege to enjoy their precious birth rights.
His birth entitles him not, to breathe his freedom;
To fetter or not to fetter him is the State’s prerogative.
Many subsist to the subhuman level miserably,
Fighting for their very survival and basic needs.
Their priorities in life, they hardly ever discern,
Getting a square meal a day is their only concern.
And the brave hearts who raise their voice,
Disappear from the earth mysteriously,
And any liberal and mass movement,
To secure just rights, crushed ruthlessly.
The poor and the meek are the easy prey,
Sans money power and sans empowerment,
To insulate them from injustice and atrocities,
They are treated as dispensable commodities.
Often they are whisked away by the police,
As proxy for the criminals, not apprehended,
Foisted on them cases false and fabricated,
Alas, they are subjected to inhuman cruelties.
Some languish as remand prisoners, illegally;
Subverting the written laws and procedure,
Tortured and severely beaten, sometimes fatally,
The custodial death, projected as suicide, ingeniously.
The unscrupulous, self centered, deceitful politicians,
The conniving, greedy, corrupt and ruthless police,
And the influential and tainted under ground Dons,
Form a triumvirate, holding the society to ransom.
By protecting, giving asylum to the fugitives from justice,
To advance their interests and to build their own empire,
They mow down mercilessly whoever crossed their path,
Breeding a social set up, where the evil supersedes the good.
The underprivileged on the lower rung of the society
Stand exposed to gross human rights violations.
They go un-noticed and unrepresented, largely,
In the changing scenario of eroding social values.
They are not Aung Sang Suu Kyi or affected celebrities,
That the Amnesty International would come to their rescue.
They are helpless and hapless lot of the passive society,
Born to suffer and suffer all thro’, their only ‘birth right’.
The universal declaration of Human Rights by the U.N,
A land mark in the annals of mankind indeed; though,
Only a few nations honour the letter and spirit of the charter,
For the gullible masses, in many, it is sadly, a forbidden tree.

In a world where people think more of their pets than the humans among them I am touched by your words. My heart aches for the injustice of any society who does not value the human soul and exist to nourish it and allow it to thrive. Our world is travelling backwards..the animals live in better harmony than we do....thank you for bringing me back to my thought of how to change this world....all I can do is send it love...and ask my universe to help me. |

I'm not qualified to review poetry but I guess, it'smy obligation to review three poems. It's very intense in its depiction of the misery ,many people live in today but I'm uncomfortable with the rhyme scheme. But I'm at a loss for suggestions. |
